Z-Tech 6000 Tugs for Panama
Aug 16, 2007
In late 2006, Cheoy Lee completed three Z-Tech 6000 tugs designed by Robert Allan in Vancouver for the Panama Canal Authority. They sailed 10,000 nautical miles from Hong Kong on their own bottom across the Pacific, making only a fuel stop in Hawaii.
Five more identical tugs are under construction for the Panama Canal Authority. The first of this second batch was launched recently. It is scheduled for completion in September.
Z-Techs combine the benefits of ASD stern drive and tractor tug capabilities. These Panama tugs are powered with twin Wartsila 9L20 engines, each producing 2,448 HP, driving LIPS azimuthing rudder propellers. These tugs are Lloyds Classed.
