Panama Canal Authority Awarded Another Z-Tech Tug Contract to Cheoy Lee
Jul 23, 2008
June 2008 was an auspicious month for Z-Tech tugs. The Z-Tech 6000 Yard No. 4914 “Yandeyarra” was delivered to BHP Billiton Minerals Ltd for operation in Port Hedland, Western Australia, the sixth Z-Tech in their fleet. A purchase order followed from the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) for 10 units of Z-Tech 6000 tugs with an option for three more units.
These 13 new tugs are essentially the same as the eight just completed for the ACP, all based on the Robert Allan / PSA Marine Z-Tech 6000 design, with the exception that these new tugs will have an increased beam of 12.0 metres to cater for the General Electric 12V228 main engines of 2630 hp each running at 900 rpm, driving Schottel SRP 1515 FP azimuth thrusters producing bollard pull of 65 tonnes. Construction will take place at Cheoy Lee’s production facility, Hin Lee (Zhuhai) Shipyard Co Ltd at Doumen.
With these 13 units, the total number of Z-Tech 6000 tugs now come to 41.
