First of four RAmparts 3000 ASD Tugs for HUD

| Taikoo, named after the historic Hong Kong dockyard, is the first in a series of four RAmparts 3000 tugs Cheoy Lee is constructing for Hong Kong United Dockyards (HUD). Being the first, the handover of Taikoo was the subject of a high profile ceremony that took place at the Cheoy Lee shipyard in Hong Kong. In attendance were senior directors of HUD. The vessel was christened by the wife of Mr. Franke Tam, financial drirector of HUD’s parent company Swire Pacific Ltd.
Slightly modified to meet the HUD requirements for operations in and around Hong Kong, the 5000hp tugs are of all steel construction, and built to Lloyds Register classification, with the notation + 100A1 Tug, +LMC. As with Cheoy Lee’s Z-Tech tugs, and other RAmparts models in the series, the RAmparts 3000 is designed by Robert Allan Ltd. Propulsion is by two Niigata 6L28HX diesels, 2500hp each, driving Niigata ZP-41 azimuthing stern drive units. As well as providing excellent maneuverability, the system provides a bollard pull of 68tonnes, and a maximum free running speed at full load of 12.5 knots.
Towing winches on the fore and aft decks handle the towing lines and there is a folding crane on the aft deck to handle stores. Other systems include an external firefighting system consisting of two remote controlled monitors mounted aft of the wheelhouse, fed by an engine driven pump on the starboard main engine.
The vessel can accommodate a crew of up to 12. Four in a single cabin on the lower deck, and the remaining eight in four two man cabins on the main deck. Also on the main deck there is also a large and fully equipped galley, a crew mess with seating for the full complement of crew. A laundry room and cold provision storage is provided on the lower deck forward.
|Frameless full height floor to ceiling windows all around the elevated wheelhouse provide the visibility required to operate this highly agile vessel. There are control stations both forward and aft, with good visibility over the respective working decks. Central in the wheelhouse is a large chart table.
The engine room is uncluttered and open with easy access to all areas. Forward in the engine room, accessed via an elevated walkway is an engineer’s workshop and store. To starboard, there is an electrical control room. Both workshop and store are heavily sound proofed to isolate engine noise.
