Cheoy Lee Expands…

Aug 11, 2011

Cheoy Lee’s main manufacturing facility in Doumen, China, recently underwent the third in a series of planned expansions since it opened 13-years ago. The latest expansion beyond the North West corner of the yard increased the land area of the shipyard to 28-acres, an increase in total shipyard area of around 30%. Consuming the main road feeding Doumen Port in the process, Cheoy Lee was responsible for reinstating this road and all services that ran beneath it prior to commencement of the shipyard development.

The additional yard area is used for mould storage, with the space previously used for this purpose used primarily for aluminium and steel vessel block assembly workshops. The building, measuring 400 feet x 140 feet (120 x 42m) is 72 feet tall and subdivided into specific areas for steel and aluminium work. Another smaller building was also created on the newly developed land area for this purpose as well. Warehouse facilities were doubled to handle continually increasing throughput and a dangerous goods store created. The water bath numerical plate cutting workshops were also expanded to cater for the surging steel vessel orders, particularly in the tug and offshore support fields.

Cheoy Lee shipyards currently employ around 1000 staff at the Doumen facility, with around 200 at the Hong Kong centre.
