A Peaceful Easy Feeling

This Asian import is aimed at cruising your worries away

With more than 5,000 vessels delivered, to say that Cheoy Lee is an experienced boatbuilder would be a massive understatement. The company has constructed bluewater sailboats, fishing trawlers, tugboats, and of course, yachts. For the last several years, it has spent much of its time and energy designing and building motoryachts, but after looking at the increasing cost of fuel and the public's apparent desire for more environmentally benign boats (something Cheoy Lee verified through market research), it believed it needed to focus on an efficient, yet bluewater-capable passagemaker. The result is the Serenity 59, which is part of a series that began with the launch of a 68-footer last year.

Cheoy Lee says that it wanted to build a boat kith the kind of strength needed to cross oceans hut without excessive weight. As a result, the 59's final design combines a solid hand-laid fiberglass hull with double-bottom tanks, resin-infused decks, bulkheads, and superstructure to minimize weight aloft. With a relatively low longitudinal center of gravity, the yacht should exhibit fine seakeeping.

Besides an efficient displacement hullform, naval architect Mike Burnevich gave the 59 a three-stateroom layout, which features a full-beam master amidships with an en suite head aft and to port and a walk-in closet aft and to starboard of the berth. The two guest staterooms include a forepeak VIP and a guest space aft and to starboard of it with side-by-side berths.

Longtime Cheoy Lee collaborator David Bentley Industrial Design gets credit for the 59's proud bow and the soft lines leading aft from it, which terminate in a canoe stern.

The standard engine is a 330-hp John Deere 6081AFM, which should offer a cruise speed of 9 knots and a range of 2,000 NM with a full 2,000-gallon fuel load. Dial back to 7 knots and you can double that range, says Cheoy Lee. The builder also offers twin 236-hp John Deeres and numerous other engines.

However you outfit your 59, you'll be cruising in style and with the confidence that can only come from an experienced builder.
