SEA OF SERENITY

New 68-foot series from Cheoy Lee

THE CHINESE COMPANY Cheoy Lee Shipyards developed a strong reputation in the 1970s and '80s for building economical, seaworthy, long-range trawler-style yachts. While the style has seen its popularity grow in recent years, the company is expanding its line with a new series called Serenity that carries a different styling. The first of the line, a 68-footer due to launch in June of this year, was developed by David Bentley Industrial Design Australia. Its hull, decks, superstructure and components are being built in fiberglass using a resin infusion system to reduce weight and increase speed and fuel efficiency. Twin Caterpillar C7 diesels, de-rated to 315 horsepower, will provide a range Of 1,800 nautical miles at 10 knots and more than 2,000 nautical miles at eight knots.

The company is offering two layout options. The standard layout includes three full-beam guest cabins and one crew cabin, each with ensuite heads. A second version features four cabins, plus crew. High Modulus in New Zealand engineered the structural design to Germanischer Lloyd class standards. Sylvia Bolton designed the interior.
