Marco Polo makes her debut - from designer Ron Holland
After less than two years in construction, the latest Ron Holland design Marco Polo – the first of the Marco Polo Series – has been delivered to Maritime Concept and Construction Hong Kong Ltd (MCC) at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club in front of Hong Kong's spectacular city skyline. Designers, Kasia Milewska and Chiara Tombolini were in attendance with me representing the Ron Holland Design Studio.
This was a pioneering project in many respects, but two points deserve particular attention. First, the finished product has more than fulfilled MCC's goal of creating a European-quality yacht in China: Marco Polo is a serious market contender on the basis of build standards as well as price and delivery. Second, sea trials have proven the value of the serious design and engineering effort invested in producing a truly efficient, long range transoceanic Explorer yacht.
Extending range, reducing fuel costs
Fulfilling both Lloyds Certification and MCA requirements for unrestricted peration, Marco Polo achieved target fuel consumption of 315 litres per hour at 14.5 knots during her extensive trials period. This translates to a range of over 6000 miles at 10.5 knots. Furthermore it suggests a saving of some 34 litres per hour compared with more conventional twin-screw installations.
East meets West
London based KCA International collaborated with Ron Holland interior design assistant Chiara Tombolini to create interior decoration that reflects the marriage of East and West design elements. This fulfilled the client’s aesthetic and practical requirements and presents a fitting result for a vessel that shows what is possible when an experienced team is brought together with a shipyard of Cheoy Lee's calibre.
Marco Polo will head for the Suez Canal early May to arrive in Monaco mid June. She will then be high profile on the Riviera during this season before Trans Atlantic to Florida for the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in October.
